What is Blue Muumuu?
Well, it all goes back to Elly and Ali's days as undergrads at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, studying photography. One of our favorite pastimes outside the darkroom (besides surfing, sipping chai at Linnaea’s, and eating Thai takeout from Noi’s), was cruising the local thrift stores for funky finds. On one such outing, Ali discovered a fantastic blue muumuu (Elly found a pink one. She is still envious to this day of Ali’s blue muumuu—it just has a much better ring to it, don’t you think?). What can we say, we liked the way it rolled off the tongue: “Blue muumuu, bluuueemuuuumuuuu.” We decided that should we ever go into business together, that would be the name of our studio. More than ten years later, after each taking our separate paths in photography—Ali in teaching, and Elly in underwater—we have reunited, and here we are: Blue Muumuu.
Yeah, it’s one of those names that may not make a lot of sense when applied to two Californian photographers, but as a nod to our longtime friendship, it makes both of us smile, and that’s what it’s all about. And the parallels of the laid-back, easy spirit from whence the design of the muumuu originated nicely reflects the ethos of the way we both approach our photography and our lives. Relaxed, yet formal. Quirky and irreverent, yet traditional. The muumuu is celebratory and spirited, yet perfectly practical and comfortable.
And just like the garment, Blue Muumuu is preferred for weddings (and engagements), a go- to for mothers-to- be, and the perfect laid-back complement to a family outing in the park or at the beach… A muumuu is a blank canvas, brought to life by one’s own vitality and movement. When it comes down to it, a muumuu is always the right fit.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, and Blue Muumuu.
